Health Care Management Undergraduate MajorProgram Emphasis/ObjectiveThe objective of the baccalaureate program with a major in Health Care Management is to provide a conceptual and practical understanding of the health systems field, with specific attention to the development of analytical and problem-solving skills. The course work in this field of study emphasizes skills and training in both the quantitative and qualitative aspects of health care services. The Health Care Management program is a full member of the Association of University Programs in Health Services Administration (AUPHA), the highest academic recognition an undergraduate health care program can achieve. The program has also been designated a regional program for most New England states including Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Maine. Students admitted from these states may be eligible for reduced out-of-state tuition.Program requirements include an internship program, which provides students with an opportunity to obtain their clinical experience. Students have successfully completed their internship program in health care organizations in Connecticut, the surrounding Northeastern states, as well as overseas. An integral part of the on-going development of the Health Care Management major is the Center for Health Care and Insurance Studies which has, as its primary objective, the design of new systems to improve the delivery of health services. The Center also provides substantial assistance in procuring internship sites for students in the program. Career OpportunitiesHealth Care Management is a relatively unique area of study in which there is a growing demand for students trained in this field. Health Care Management specialists are employed by hospitals, clinics, government planning and regulatory agencies, health maintenance organizations, hospital associations, consulting firms, computer vendors, health insurance companies, and hospital equipment and supplies manufacturers. Program alumni are employed in hospitals and health care organizations throughout the United States.
