1. When should I start thinking about a summer internship?

From the Fall of your Junior year. It is never too early to plan, but definitely look out for our announcement in Fall.

2.  Who do I go for help in writing a resume?

Take your resume to Department of Career Services to receive feedback on how to improve it. Make sure your resume contains the relevant courses and list of skills (see list of courses and their related skills). Career Resource Assistants are availble to critique your resumes Monday-Friday from 9:30-4:30 at:

3. When is the resume due? To whom? And how?

Resumes are usually due in early Oct-Nov for the following Summer. We will send out emails to your UConn email address on the exact dates when resumes are due, or if there are special announcements.

Upload a copy of your Resume to the eRecruiting website of Career Services. Make sure you publish your resume in the "MIS Undergraduate Interns" Resume Book (uploading instructions). These resumes will be nicely bound and sent to interested companies wanting to hire summer interns.

If you apply for an internship through us, you agree to register for it when you get the internship offer.

4. When and where are the interviews scheduled with companies?

The interviews are usually scheduled by the companies starting January (however sometimes they start in October-November of the previous calendar year). They may contact you directly to set up times and sites. The interviews may be held on campus or in company offices.

5. Are the internships paid?

Almost all of our internships are paid. Some small company or non-profit ones might be without pay, but is a valuable learning experience.

6. When do I register for OPIM 4891 (Summer Internship program)?
Have an MIS internship offer in hand. Then meet or email Prof. Bhattacharjee with your job description to obtain a PeopleSoft permission number. Regsiter online through Peoplesoft for OPIM 4891 (Summer Session 4). Check continuingstudies.uconn.edu for registration deadlines. Keep in mind that the registration is mandatory if you obtained the position through our program.

7. What will be the fee for OPIM 4891 course?

The fee and payments are set by the College of Continuing Studies. For your information, in Summer 2005 the fee for OPIM 4891 course (6 credits) was $1,440. For current information, check continuingstudies.uconn.edu

9. I am an international student. Can I do an internship ?

Usually yes. Check with us and the Department of International Services and Programs.

10. What are the requirements to complete the internship program ?

Complete a full-time internship for 10-12 weeks. Do a course paper and presentation at the end of your internship. The paper and presentation follow schedules set by the instructors (check Timelines above).

11. When is the course paper due? What should it contain?

The course paper is due on the first day of classes after summer (first day of Fall semester). Please see Guidelines on our web site for more details and Timelines for specific dates. The paper should be between 12-15 pages long, and should have the following:

- brief overview of the company, what it does and your job/responsibilities;
- detailed description of your EXPERIENCE.

EXPERIENCE can be can be anything: technical, inter-personal, revelation – in short, what you got out of your internship. Think of how your internship work fits with the courses you took, what you learnt about yourself and the work environment, what you liked about it, etc.

12. Can I ask for an extension on the paper deadline?

Not unless there are serious issues. If you have any problems you must contact Prof. Bhattacharjee before the deadline.

13. What should be the report contain if I am working in a confidential project?

14. If two of us are working on the same project, can we submit a joint paper?

Generally speaking, if there is more than one student in the same company, you may give a joint presentation. You have to submit an individual paper.

15. When will the presentation be scheduled? What will be the format?

The presentation will be scheduled during the first 2 weeks of the Fall semester. The date and the room will be announced on the web site. It will be a first come, first sign-up, and first present scenario. There will be a small (about 5 - 7 minutes) presentation for each of you, where you will need to highlight the companies business, your contribution during the internship, and your overall experience. Come early and sign-up for your slot. Powerpoint based presentations are advised but not mandatory. If two or more of you have interned in the same company, you can give a joint presentation. Contact us in advance if you'd like to do so.

16. What is an internship site visit? How much time does it take?

Prof. Bhattacharjee will try and schedule an on-site visit at a mutually convenient time.  It consists of a short meeting (15 – 20 minutes) between you, your supervisor and them. The idea is to find out how your internship is going on whether it is a productive environment.

17. What kind of grade will I receive?

 You will receive a satisfactory or unsatisfactory grade (S/U). There are no letter grades.

18. We are interested in participating in the Summer Internship program. What does our company need to do?

Please contact us from the links from this site and send us your HR or other contact person address and other details. We send a booklet of students resumes to all our contacts in companies around January for that year's summer internship. You may contact the short listed students directly for interviews and internship confirmation. A student registers for credits after receiving a confirmed internship offer.
