The Summer Internship Program for our undergraduates majoring in Management Information Systems was established in 1995. The program has placed over a few hundred students interning at 30 plus companies during this time. Our growing program has been well received by all involved as a win-win activity. We believe that the internship experience strengthens our technical academic program and adds to our students' continued strong performance in the job market (reported 100% placement in each of the last six years). Practical experience in the field of Information Systems is of great importance to the students as the technology evolves at an increasing pace and companies attempt to make the best use of the IT opportunities.
Our students are usually extremely motivated and possess a solid background in computer technology. The typical MIS major completing his or her junior year has a good understanding of business utilization of IT and have completed basic MIS coursework along with core courses in databases, C++, and/or networks and/or internet technology. More advanced students will have completed various combinations of courses in data structures/database design using Oracle, SQL, Microsoft Access, programming courses using C++, network design and analysis and have a variety of additional coursework such as Visual Basic, JAVA and Web development prior to their internship.
We seek summer opportunities in terms of paid positions for students who will have completed at least their junior years. We are looking for positions in which our students, in addition to applying their immediate knowledge, would be able to expand their learning experience and their horizons, where they will have the opportunity to contribute to the identification of business value from information technology.
In order to enhance the success of our interns, our internship program includes each of the following:
1. Six hours of academic
credits;
2. Formal and required pre-internship preparation sessions;
3. On-campus interview opportunities for participating companies (scheduled
as requested by companies);
4. Faculty involvement in support roles, including: internship preparation,
on-site visits if agreeable to employer, post-internship reviews, and academic
report/research paper evaluation.
The internships usually are for 10-12 weeks full time work. The course/credit structure has also been designed to accommodate semester-long co-op positions.
Our faculty is proud of the quality and achievements of our current MIS majors and of our growing group of alumni. We appreciate the reception that you in the business community have given to them. For our part, we will continue to strive to keep our program at the cutting edge.
If your company is interested in working with us to offer summer internships, please contact us at your earliest convenience (email works best). Please let us know the contact person to whom we should send student resumes (if not to you). We look forward to establishing this partnership with you.
